Passive Energy Project

In order to promote green energy alternatives, a geothermal project was proposed by IRGWF. The title of the project was "Underground pipe canals as sources of cold air ".

A summary of the project is presented below.

Objective: Introduction of a green energy as a source of cooling air

Summary:

In order to cool down the air temperature in the compressor room of Zarin Flour Mills, an air conditioner unit was used. The unit was running 24 hrs a day to maintain the room temperature within the desired range and to cool down the compressor.

It was suggested to connect the available underground canals to the compressor room, so that the cool air from the canals enters the room. The air-conditioner unit used 2860 W.

There were 200 m of underground canals (cross-sectional area : 0.8m x 1.2 m) in the factory. By connecting these canals to the compressor room, the air conditioner unit was replaced by a fan (wattage = 370 W) to pull in the air.

The preliminary results of this project were positive. During summer (maximum ambient temperature = 38 c) the average room temperature was about 30 c. In this project cooling capacity of Earth is used as a green alternative to conventional electrical energy

Period of Project: 60 days, March-April, 1999

Project Manager: S. Sagheb, M.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering

Project Sponsor: Iranian Green Wave Front

Project Location: Zarin Flour Mills, km.27, Ghoochan Road, Mashhad, Iran.
